Five Things to Do in Your First Hour of Any RPG

June 16, 2026 · Lena Vogt

Starting a fresh RPG can feel overwhelming — new systems, new menus, new everything. Over years of reviewing them I've built a little routine that helps me get comfortable fast, and it works for almost any game.

First, read your first few abilities properly instead of tapping through. Understanding your toolkit early saves hours of confusion later. Second, talk to every early NPC; the good games plant hooks in those first conversations.

Third, find out how forgiving the game is with respecs and resources before you commit to a build. Fourth, tweak the controls and difficulty in settings — most people never open that menu and suffer for it.

Fifth, and most important, give it a full hour before judging. Plenty of great RPGs open slow. If it still hasn't grabbed you after that, then trust your gut and move on.
